2007-2008 Promotion Standards

In order to participate in the promotion ceremony and dance, the following academic standard is expected of all students in the third trimester of the 2007-2008 school year:

Academic: No more than one “F” (Fail) grade in conjunction with a “U” (Unsatisfactory) mark in work habits on the final report card.

In order to participate in the dance after the promotion ceremony, the following behavioral standards are expected of all students in the third trimester of the 2007-2008 school year.  Students ineligible to participate in the dance may participate in the promotion ceremony if they have met the criteria listed above.  Students attending the dance must have participated in the promotion ceremony beforehand.

Work Habits: No more than one “U” (Unsatisfactory) mark on the final report card.

Citizenship: No more than one “U” (Unsatisfactory) mark on the final report card.

Discipline:  No more than 180 minutes of detention; no more than one day of suspension; no more than one day of Saturday School.  Also, earning one suspension and one Saturday school would be grounds for ineligibility for the dance.

When considering clothing for the promotion ceremony and dance, please bear in mind the importance of keeping the occasion and dress age appropriate.  Please remember that the students participating in this event are middle school students, not high school students.  They will have many opportunities to dress in formal wear for proms and other events once they are in high school.  With these standards in mind, the guidelines are as follows:

Boys:        Dress slacks and a dress shirt alone, or worn with a jacket and optional tie.  Shirts may be short or long sleeved and must have collars.  Tuxedos are not appropriate for this occasion.  Hats may not be worn during the ceremony or the dance.  Flowers are not allowed.

Girls:         Simple “dressy” dresses are appropriate.  “Prom-type” formal gowns are not allowed and neither are strapless, backless, and halter-type dresses.  "Spaghetti strap" dresses are allowed.  Skirt or dress lengths may not be floor length (though “tea-length” is appropriate) nor may they be shorter than fingertip length.  Shoes must be of a reasonable height and have a strap on the back, as students will be climbing stairs to walk across the stage during the ceremony.  Hats may not be worn during the ceremony or the dance.  Real flowers are not allowed, but small artificial flowers may be worn in the hair or pinned to the dress.  It is recommended that girls have a sweater with them, as it may be chilly on the night of the promotion ceremony.

If you have any questions regarding the standards for participation in the promotion ceremony or dance, please feel free to call John Jackson at (310) 545-4878 extension 3000.
