Don't Throw Those Bagels Away!

Sound advice… AND the name of a new club begun recently at Mira Costa High School

by sophomore Julie Devine. Her discovery that bakeries and restaurants are required by

law to dispose of their unsold goods at the end of each day inspired her to find

a way to get the unused food to people who need it.

Every Thursday, club members pick up the leftover bagels from Noah's in downtown

Manhattan Beach and hand them out at the St. Margaret's Center in Lennox.

As Devine explains, “It is a very good experience to go. The people receiving the

bagels are very appreciative, and often take bags home for their children.”

While the club has no specific long-term plans to expand their operation,

Devine is hopeful that other bakeries and restaurants will join the cause.

As she says, “There are thousands of starving people in the world,

and lots of perfectly good bagels and other food thrown out every day.

What kind of sense does that make?”
