Great News About Mira Costa High School That You Can Read In 60 Seconds

May 21, 2007

Hello music lovers--

The MCHS Orchestra's ever-popular Pops concert is just around the  corner, on June 14. Among the tasty treats: "Stairway to Heaven," performed by the Chamber Ensemble, if you can dig that. Plus  highlights from "Wicked" and "Beauty and the Beast." The "Superman" March by John Williams. Plus light classical selections like the  Overture from the Barber of Seville. It's going to be a great one,  and a wonderful way to cap off the season.

Attached is the flyer for date, time and ticket outlets. MCHS Orchestra's Pops Concert (pdf)

These kids are amazing, and well worth an evening.

Hope you're able to pop in.

Mira Costa’s Student Scientists Shine!

The Beach Cities Robotics Team commanded the floor to take 2nd place honors at the San Diego Regional Robotics Team Competition.

Bryan Le, Kiel Ireland, Kelly Mayfield and Guy Parsey were selected as regional winners in the 2007 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards Competition.  The students’ project, Solar Waste Treatment System, was judged by a panel of science educators and distinguished scientists as one of the notable projects submitted to this year’s contest, and will advance to the next level of competition.

Members of Mira Costa’s Roundhouse Club recently took the QuikScience Challenge…and placed 2nd! out of 32 teams representing both public and private schools in Southern California.  The 6-person corps completed a series of projects on ocean conservation and marine biology, all tackling the subject of red tides.  A final interview with judges at USC sealed the team’s 2nd place win – and garnered them a 4-day trip to the Wrigley Institute on Catalina Island in June.

Next Fall: Even More To Choose From At Costa!

Thanks to the Mira Costa English Department, next year's seniors will be able to choose from an expanded array of course offerings.  “The Bible as Literature,” “Women’s Literature,” “The Noir Literature of Los Angeles,” and “The Evolution of Humor as Literature” are four of the eight new class options to be available in the fall.

English Department faculty designed the one-semester courses (which are expected to be approved by the UCs in the next few months) based on their own particular interests and passions, which should guarantee inspiring study and conversation.  The new classes provide alternatives for students who would otherwise enroll in College Prep English, and will give them the opportunity to experience specialized coursework similar to that which they will soon encounter in college.
