MCHS GIRLS’ BASKETBALL WRAPS UP HISTORY-MAKING SEASON!

The stats:

For the first time in 33 years, the Lady Mustangs made it to the CIF finals.

For the first time ever, the team made it to the State Championship, advancing to the semi-finals.

The girls ended their season with an impressive 25 – 8 record, and with none of the starting five graduating, have set their sights on an even winning-er season next year.

The girls’ basketball program finishes its third year under the leadership of Coaches Don Braunecker and Neal Hyams, with Braunecker voted Coach of the Year by The Daily Breeze.

Plan to watch an even more experienced, more determined Mira Costa team next year…but arrive at the beautiful, newly-renovated Fisher Gym early -- seats promise to be a  hot commodity!

A PRESCRIPTON AGAINST STUDENT DRUG USE --

RANDOM DRUG TESTING CONTINUES AT MCHS

On April 10, the second round of voluntary, random student drug testing was completed at the high school, with over 150 student athletes tested. No student who tested had a “positive” result.

The program, coordinated by the Manhattan Beach Athletic Foundation, is administered by an outside drug testing laboratory in order to ensure complete confidentiality.  The urine tests, which detect the presence of the most common drugs of abuse (including alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and PCP) are given at school to registered students chosen randomly by lottery. Results are reported only to a student’s family.

Three more test days are scheduled between now and the end of the school year.

TWELVE MCHS SENIORS MAKE FINAL CUT IN THE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

Owen Boochever, Alex Doo, Brandon Dunn, Erin Duralde, Samuel Gong, Charlie Hsu, John Kreager, Sarah Lahti, Connor Rowe, Rebecca Sydow, David Tsao and Ariel Watkins have been named Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  These fine students have distinguished themselves in a field which began with 1.4 million entrants.

In the next several months, 8,200 of the 15,000 Finalists will be notified that they have been awarded a college scholarship, which is earned on the basis of  the Finalist's academic record, test scores, recommendations, extracurricular activities, leadership, and an essay.

We wish the best of luck to these extraordinary students.
