NEW COUNSELOR AT COSTA SUPPORTS KIDS ‘IN THE MIDDLE’ A familiar face to many in the District, Jennifer Woodie, Mira Costa alumnus and former MBUSD Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Coordinator and Counselor, has recently stepped into a new position at MCHS – Education Support Counselor. Funded entirely by money from the state, Ms. Woodie will work closely with Jennie Mallires, MCHS’s new VP, to identify students who will benefit from additional services and to place them in one of the new Student Academic Support classes being offered this semester at Costa. These courses offer students a gamut of in-house services, including tutoring, mentoring, instruction in the development of motivation, study, and organizational skills, and have a special problem-solving focus to help teens deal with some of the difficult issues they face. Ms. Woodie brings characteristic enthusiasm and energy to her new role: “I am so happy to be working with these students, particularly. I know I can make a difference in their lives.” For more information about the Education Support Program, contact Jennifer at 310/318-7337, ext. 5027.
February 8, 2006 MIRA COSTA STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR AFRICAN AIDS TREATMENT; YOU CAN HELP! Last November, several students enrolled in the PACE (People Attaining Complete Equality) class at MCHS decided to learn more about HIV and AIDS. “Hearing about all the children dying of this disease hurt my heart,” explains Chanel Sonego, one of the spokespersons for the group. “I was determined to spread the word and make our community more aware of the problem.”
The result: PACE’s 1st ever AIDS/HIV Awareness Fundraising Event to be held on Sunday, March 18, from 5:00P – 8:00P at Shade Hotel. Organized by Rachel Klein, Michelle Meadows, Francesca Campbell, and Sonego, the goal of the evening is to bring much-needed attention to, and raise funds for, HIV/AIDS. The event will feature Pam Yelsky, founder of Women At Risk, an outreach organization for women living with HIV/AIDS. Pam, who is living with AIDS herself, recently lost her stepson Beau, a MCHS student, to the disease.
100% of the profits from the $100/person donation will go directly to Keep A Child Alive, the mission of which is to provide medical treatment to citizens of Africa infected with HIV/AIDS.
The March 18 evening will crown a week of AIDS-related fundraising and education at the high school, organized entirely by PACE, Mira Costa’s peer outreach program. RSVP for the 3/18 event at Fundraiseforaids@yahoo.com. Questions? Contact Dr. Rocky Wilson, PACE Advisor, at 310-318-7337 ext. 5102 or Rwilson@manhattan.k12.ca.us. CHEVRON TO FUND NEW MIRA COSTA COMPUTER LAB Chevron’s annual grant to the Manhattan Beach Unified School District will go this year to purchase a much-needed math and science computer lab at Mira Costa High School. The $40,000 gift will be used to buy approximately 30 computers, along with software to support and extend the math and science curriculums, including geometric sketch pad and graphing programs, which will assist students in interpreting and charting the results of their science experiments. We are very grateful to Chevron for its continued commitment to the students of our District! |
