MISSION STATEMENT We believe that the opportunity for participation in a wide variety of student-selected activities is a vital part of the student's educational experience. The After-School Activities Program is considered an integral part of the school's educational program that provides experiences that will help to build character through the development of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. These experiences help promote a sense of accomplishment by engaging students in fun, competitive play, and to foster the belief that trying one's best in all life activities, is as important as it is in sports. Such participation is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the school, to the activity, to the student body, to the community, and to the student. All students, regardless of race, gender, or economic background, should have the opportunity to compete in a well-organized after-school program. ELIGIBILITY In order for a student to participate in the A.S.AP., he or she must have at least a 2.0 GPA, no more than 3 N's, no U's on last report card, no Suspensions/Saturday School in last trimester and satisfactory behavior as determined by school personnel. Each student-athlete must also have the MBMS Code of Conduct for Student-Athletes and Parent Consent and Liability Waiver forms signed, filled out and returned to the main office or Mr. Dean's classroom, Room 101. Forms can be picked up in the main office or in Room 101. TRYOUTS Some of the team sports hold tryouts due to the limited amount of funding and/or coaches. Tryouts times and places will be available from the Athletic Director and will be publicized in the school Daily Bulletin. Team sports that include tryouts are football, volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball. COMMITMENT Being a member of a team or club is both a tremendous responsibility and honor. Sports teams practice and play games on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays, depending on the sport. Practices generally run from 3:10 to 4:25 and games from 3:30 to 5:00. Clubs usually meet once a week from 3:10 to 4:10 depending on the club. SOUTH BAY LEAGUE The MBMS Waves are members of the South Bay League. The SBL consists of the following middle schools: Redondo Beach Adams, Redondo Beach Parras, Hermosa Valley, El Segundo, Hawthorne-Dana, Palos Verdes Intermediate, Palos Verdes Ridgecrest, Palos Verdes Miraleste and Chadwick. SCHOLAR ATHLETES MBMS takes pride in our athletes, our athletic program, and our academic standards. After each season and trimester of sports, we reward our athletes who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above with an scholar/athlete certificate. DONATION/CONTRIBUTION The MBMS After-School Activities Program is supported 100% through parent donations and fundraising. We highly suggest a participation donation for any students involved in any team sports or non-academics clubs to cover transportation, officials, equipment and scholarship costs. A Level 4 donation, $90, is suggested for team sports that play 5 or more games in the SBL. A Level 3, $50 donation, is suggested for team sports that play less than 5 games in the SBL or non-academic clubs that meet 10 or more times. A Level 2, $30 donation, is suggested for sports training that play no games in the SBL or non-academic clubs that meet less than 10 times. Winter 2007-2008 After School Teams and Clubs Info
